RE: [Maine-birds] Northern Parula & BTB Warbler - Dresden

My son and I were chasing a Black and White Warbler through the woods around Capisic Pond in Portland yesterday and found a Northern Parula as well.  Gorgeous bird. I was able to ID it partially due to refreshing my skills up for the coming warbler waves and was happy to have my gut reaction be correct. As any of you who have birded with me know I have a form of birders Turrets where I blurt out any old name when I first see movement with about a 104% likelihood of getting it wrong. Seems like some of the old synapses are finding a way to work finally though so who knows, maybe an old dog can learn some new tricks.

Checking around the feeders this morning we have a FOY Veery hanging out. After several incidents that normally spook birds from my feeders did not seem to phase it, I carried out my 360 degree camera and set it up where it was feeding. It retreated out of sight while I was out there, but thankfully bounced right back within a minute or so of me leaving. It has been  hanging out in within feet of the camera. Checking in occasionally I have seen most of the other usual birds wandering around it too so I can't wait to get the footage off of it.

Cheers,

Rob O'Connell

Better news, I had a lively singing male Northern Parula at Dresden Bog on Saturday (4/29). There was also a single Black-throated Blue Warbler there that sang twice. Seemed early but there are more than 20 previous April records in Maine for the species.

Mature male, sadly, the casualty of a window crash, although we have tape and decals.
