Hi all,
On Saturday, Bill Sheehan, Louis Bevier and I searched for rare geese
among thousands of Canada Geese in various locations in Aroostook
County.
Our first objective was to locate the Ross's Goose who had been seen
on 9/28-29 at Puddledock Pond in Fort Fairfield. The bird wasn't there
when we checked around 11am, so Bill suggested we check a few nearby
goose hang-outs. The first stop featured a white goose who turned out
to be a continuing ALBINO Canada Goose. At our next stop along the
Aroostook River, another white bird was visible, and this time the
bird turned out to be the ROSS'S GOOSE. The bird was in a field along
Russell Road on the edge of the Aroostook River (GPS: 46.792032,
-67.800975).
From there we checked a number of other locations, but didn't see any
rare geese until we got to Collins Pond in Caribou, where Louis
noticed a collection of CACKLING GEESE. We ended up tallying a raft of
15 Cacklers among the hundreds of Canada Geese loafing on the pond.
Our next stop at a nearby farm pond produced two more CACKLING GEESE,
bringing our afternoon total to 17!
All in all, a great day of goosing in Aroostook County! I'll have
eBird lists to share in the near future with photos of the rarities.
Best,
Josh
