[Maine-birds] International Shorebird Survey opportunity

Greetings, birding friends! I hope most of you have heard of the International Shorebird Survey (ISS), a vital, volunteer-driven monitoring network for shorebirds across the US. The ISS has been among the most important sources of population data for shorebirds in our hemisphere for over 40 years, and makes an important contribution internationally as well. You can find out more here:
http://www.manomet.org/programs/shorebird-conservation/international-shorebird-survey-iss

There are a number of ISS monitoring sites in Maine, and for the last 9 years or so I've been monitoring one of the coolest -- the Mackworth Flats and Presumpscot River Estuary in Falmouth, which encompasses Maine Audubon's Gilsland Farm property. The time has come for me to pass this important work on to a fellow shorebird lover.

The monitoring is straightforward and you can choose one of three protocols, which range from pretty demanding to pretty relaxed. You don't have to be a shorebirding rock star to get the job done, but you do need a spotting scope and some walking is required. Monitoring of this site happens in both spring and fall. Sometimes in fall the flats are buzzing with thousands of peeps at low tide -- it's a blast!

Please e-mail me at scott@naturalpathwalks.com if you're interested.

Go mighty shorebirds!

Peace & good birding,
