[Maine-birds] Re: (Maine Birds) Mount Desert Island Birds: Gray Catbird

Mount Desert Island Birds:  Gray Catbird

Lakeside Road feeder, Hancock, US-ME
Feb 19, 2013 10:30 AM - 11:00 AM
Protocol: Stationary
Comments: Ann Dalton gave me a call about a Gray Catbird (Dumetella carolinensis) that has been coming to this feeder since November 30 2012. The bird showed up for us this morning and came to the peanut butter in one of the feeders. Good Photos taken.
One interesting comment about this feeder station. While I was there we counted at least Nine Red Squirrels… A discussion ensued about the Nest Robbing behavior of Red Squirrel and how to remove them..... This is a major issue in the bird feeding world. While feeding the birds we are also feeding the predators that eat birds and bird eggs.
8 species

Hairy Woodpecker (Picoides villosus) 1
Blue Jay (Cyanocitta cristata) 2
American Crow (Corvus brachyrhynchos) 3
Black-capped Chickadee (Poecile atricapillus) 5
Red-breasted Nuthatch (Sitta canadensis) 4
White-breasted Nuthatch (Sitta carolinensis) 1
Brown Creeper (Certhia americana) 1

Gray Catbird (Dumetella carolinensis) 1 This is another example of a feeder bird in Maine during a hard winter. The bird showed up while I was there. Photos were taken. This bird has been here since November 30 and appears to be healthy and alone.
