Hi folks,

I checked out the exposed cobble bar north of Canal Street along the Kennebec River at about 3:30 this afternoon. The bar extends well above the end of the road on the other side of the river.  The only gulls present were 36 ring-bills.  It is, however, worth checking this time of year for lesser black-backed gulls and early white-winged gulls.

There were a couple of plants still in flower including a bright white Daisy fleabane (Erigeron strigosus) and black mustard (Brassica nigra).  The mustard plant was huge.  This late flowering species of fleabane almost glows in the dark when dusk approaches.

I saw a 20 X 20 foot patch of sheep laurel in flower on Roque Island last Friday.  The patch was in various stages of flowering.  Cool plant!

The red spruce cone crop on Roque was fairly good but it was not mast-crop size.  By contrast, the white spruce cone crop was lower than average, although my observations were restricted to about 20 linear acres of shoreline.

Keep looking,

Norm Famous
