The south-west half of the Brunswick-Freeport CBC (aka "The Bean Count") has a preliminary tally of 70 species. Here are some highlights for the day - in no particular order:
· A total of 940 MALLARDS were seen in Brunswick, primarily in the stream by Richards Drive and the pond at Parkview Hospital. A NORTHERN PINTAIL was also at Parkview Hospital. Spotted by Nancy Schwarzel, Linda Woodard, and Sandra Mitchell. The Peregrine Falcon that was spotted yesterday at the Andros Mill in Brunswick was not seen.
· 4 SNOW BUNTINGS were spotted by Nancy Houlihan, Turk Duddy, Calien Lewis and Becky Marvil on Flying Point. The only BARRED OWL seen was also spotted by this group.
· A BARROW'S GOLDENEYE was found in the Royal River by Joanne Stevens, Pat Sanborn and Ann Hancock. A LESSER SCAUP and a BELTED KINGFISHER were also seen by this group.
· 11 DUNLIN were at Winslow Park in Freeport as well as another BARROW'S GOLDENEYE at the South Freeport dock, seen by Chuck Barnes, Traczie Bellinger and Dana Palm.
· A SNOWY OWL was at Brunswick Landing (former Brunswick Naval Air Station) picked out by Gordan Smith and Rob O'Connell. Gordan also owling and found 1 NORTHERN SAWHET.
· Derek and Jeanette Lovitch along with Dan Nickerson patrolled Freeport west of 295 and managed 4 WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS at Hidden Pond Preserve. (Correct me, Derek, if I have the wrong location.) This group found the only COMMON REDPOLLS seen.
· The only BLACK GUILLEMOTS (2) on the count were spotted off Chebeague Island by Robby Lambert, Stella Walsh and Beverly Johnson's group.
It was a great sunny day, if somewhat chilly. Thanks to all CBC'ers everywhere and especially to the "Bean Count" crew.
