Hi,
Many of us are familiar with the blue jay's mimicking abilities = red-shouldered and broad-wing hawks, etc. Yesterday an Owls Head jay responded to the sweet chipping notes of an osprey circling overhead. It was an amazingly competent and convincing match of the osprey's call notes. When I returned to the location this morning, I heard the repetitive sweet chips again. This time it was just the lone blue jay who has apparently assimilated the osprey sounds into its vocal repertoire.
