[Maine-birds] carnivorous Carduelis

Greetings, birding friends! It's been interesting to hear reports of unexpected species sticking their beaks into suet blocks around our chilly state.

Here in the western mountains "spring" is still more astronomical than actual, with sub-freezing nighttime temps and cheezy daytime sleet squalls threatening to extend mud season into July.

There's a brisk business at my feeders, with the best customers being a lingering group of 60-80 Common Redpolls.

These little snarfers are munching down on everything on the menu: black oil sunflower, nyjer seed, safflower seed and — to my surprise — suet.

They're a rowdy bunch but I'm gonna miss 'em...

Peace & good birding,
