[Maine-birds] Monhegan, 5.17.19

Arrived on Monhegan Island this morning. Had a surprisingly great day of birding out here with Bryan Pfeiffer, Bill Thompson, and Josh Lincoln, and part of the time with Don and Sherry Reimer. At Donna Cundy's feeders, at least 10 Baltimore Orioles at one time, with 2 Orchard Orioles, a dozen or so Rose-breasted Grosbeaks (some singing), and singing White-crowned and White-throated Sparrows (with 1 Lincoln's mixed in). We spent a long time around the spruce trees beyond the Trailing Yew, watching dozens of birds make a circuit, including several Blackburnian, Blackpoll, Cape May, Wilson's and Magnolia Warblers. Several Merlins sweeping through on a regular basis, as well.

Down near the cul-de-sac past the church, Bryan and I found a female HOODED WARBLER, which stayed in that area for quite a while for great looks and photos. Later, the six of us got brief looks at a male HOODED WARBLER near the Ice Pond (full hood, loud chip note). I hope the two warblers find each other. We ended the day with 19 warbler species among the four of us (17 for me personally).

Other highlights included a lingering Long-tailed Duck hen in the harbor, a Chimney Swift, a VESPER SPARROW among many Savannah Sparrows in the pumpkin garden, active RT Hummingbirds, 2 E. Kingbirds, Bobolinks and a singing N. Waterthrush in the Meadow, and a female Indigo Bunting. Also heard Winter Wren, Carolina Wren, pheasants.
