Re: [Maine-birds] Digest for maine-birds@googlegroups.com - 4 updates in 4 topics

Mark Rolerson and I spent a rainy Saturday morning at Two Lights State Park. It was a good day for alcids. In addition to a fair number of black guillemots, we saw several razorbills and one common murre. The dark stripe from the eye across the white cheek was clearly visible. Danny Danforth

The Greater Portland Christmas Bird Count took place on Sunday, December 15
under sunny but extremely windy conditions. The 49 participants in 13 teams
found 99 species. By far the most unusual tally was 195 Tree Swallows --a
species only recorded on one previous count in the last 40 years, and that
was for a single bird. The birds were found by multiple teams all along the
coast and in the marshes, and counters generally felt their totals were
conservative, as these aerialists don't stay too still this time of year.
Not sure exactly what they are feeding on. Very rough seas kept most
waterfowl counts down, but among the 23 species seen were a Snow Goose,
Northern Shoveler, Gadwall, and Northern Pintail. Loons, however, were well
represented with 21 Red-throateds and a record 346 Commons. Other high
counts included 49 Sanderlings, 24 Red-bellied Woodpeckers, 14 Carolina
Wrens, and 18 American Pipits. Notable also were 3 Northern Saw-whet Owls, 3
Northern Shrikes, a Field Sparrow, Lark Sparrow, Yellow-breasted Chat, 3
Pine Warblers, and a Dickcissel.

Hi all,
Dan Nickerson joined Jeannette and I in our annual combing of the Moody sector of the Southern York County CBC yesterday.
Covering over 15 party miles by foot during over 7 hours of our 8.5 hr day, we check lots of thickets and seasonal hotspots. Overall numbers were low as lack of snow cover and open inland waters continued to reduce normal seasonal concentrations of both landbirds and waterbirds at the coast.

Our 57 total species was only slight below average, augmented by an impressive roster (even for this always-productive territory) of "good birds." In fact, the level of quality to quantity was pretty darn good.

Highlights included:

- 1 DOVEKIE - Moody Point
- 1 COMMON MURRE - beached on Ogunquit Beach. Released, apparently successfully. (Story on store's Facebook page)
- 1 Ruby-crowned Kinglet - Ogunquit Beach dunes
- 2 Chipping Sparrows - Bayberry St.
- 1 ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER - Ogunquit Beach dunes.
- 3 PINE WARBLERS (1 female at Beach Plum Farm, pair including different female by plumage at nearby Beach Plum Lane).

From Robert Dixon
12/18/19 - Eliot yard - Chipping Sparrows (11) under the feeders. Nice
count for the date. Unfortunately not in a CBC circle. Photos.

After waiting for close to an hour the dickcissel seen over the weekend at 34 Mutton Lane in Viezie popped up today on top of a bush behind the row of feeders there. Would have had a get photo opportunity if I had thought to recharge my camera battery before heading out this morning
