This is turning into a purple finch year. Numbers at the feeder continue to increase, easily 30 now. They tend to feed all day and consume lots of black oil. May have to increase my budget numbers. It has been at least five years since I have had so many. There are a few house finches which seem to travel with the purples. Siskins average 4 to 6 now. I don't usually get them til later. The goldfinches have a hard time now, being crowded out by purples. For some reason my local downy woodpeckers have been nearly absent this fall, the hairy actually comes more often. The mourning doves are now competing with rock doves. I have cut back on the tray feeders to try to discourage the rock doves but without success yet. I am concerned that the cardinals which prefer the trays may have trouble. Most winters I have 6-10, but at present only a couple are showing up.
