Comments: The cruise ship Eurodam was in port today and 13 intrepid folks joined me for an "Ocean Trail Hike" along the eastern shore of MDI from Sand Beach to Otter Point. This is my 18th year organizing ecology based walks focused on the Native Birds of Mount Desert Island and the Gulf of Maine. Today was an exceptional day with a westerly wind, sunshine and some good birds.

Red-breasted Merganser (Mergus serrator) 1 flying over the water heading norht towards land
Ruffed Grouse (Bonasa umbellus) 1 This was my first Ruffed Grouse of the season this year and believe and FOY bird for me.
Common Loon (Gavia immer) 5
Red-necked Grebe (Podiceps grisegena) 5
Northern Gannet (Morus bassanus) 1 off shore in the scope
Great Cormorant (Phalacrocorax carbo) 1 clearly seen in good light a juvi with a big white belly preening on Old Soaker
Ring-billed Gull (Larus delawarensis) 2
Herring Gull (Larus argentatus) 85
Black Guillemot (Cepphus grylle) 2
Downy Woodpecker (Picoides pubescens) 1
Pileated Woodpecker (Dryocopus pileatus) 1 calling

Comments: The cruise ship Eurodam and 12 passengers on a coastal MDI adventure with the "Ocean Trail Hike", A two mile hike from behind Sand Beach to Otter Point. Clouds have replaced the warm sunshine of the morning and westerly winds still blowing hard. Many birds on this side of the island today.
