Re: [Maine-birds] Off-topic, perhaps. Feral cats

Hello all,

While I am far from convinced that birding listserves are the best venue for debating conservation issues, it is impossible for me to bird in a box where real world issues (i.e. bird conservation) are out of sight, and therefore out of mind.

Therefore, I feel compelled to address this last comment, as TNR programs are scientifically proven to be completely ineffective at reducing bird kills, and in fact, have often been cited as increasing the problem.  TNR does not work, period.  And while some people disparage rodents for eating birds eggs, native rodents are an important part of the ecosystem, and the many BILLIONS killed by cats each year is not a good thing by any stretch of the imagination.  TNR is not good for birds...or for cats.

Here are some links about the failures of TNR and related policies:

But on a lighter note:

I strongly believe that Trap Neuter and Return is the best way to control the overall numbers of feral cats. It is also humane. Cats are also great at rodent control, rodents which feed on bird's eggs. Mine rarely catch a bird but catch far more small rodents.

I just want to encourage all the members of this listserv to take action in whatever way you can to help reduce the number of feral cats in this country. I think a link to this article from the NY Times has already been posted, so I'm just adding it here for anyone who may have missed it. I would also like to add that I have become disgusted with a group I have supported in the past. That is Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in Utah. They do a great deal of wonderful work, but they are stubbornly continuing to support trap, neuter, and release programs for feral cats. I don't like to promote the wholesale slaughter of any animals, but this problem requires a more permanent solution. If you would care to address your concerns to Best Friends, their e-mail address is editor@bestfriends.org. Their CEO is Gregory Castle. Their physical address is 5001 Angel Canyon Road, Kanab, Utah, 84741.

Thanks for taking the time to read this.
