Thethermometer registered the highest temperature so far this count season- acomfortable 54 degrees. The winds were blowing steadily 10-15mph out of thenorthwest, becoming a bit lighter by late afternoon. Raptor Observations:Buteos were taking to the skies today with good flights of both Red-tailedHawks and Red-shouldered Hawks. At one point, seven Red-tailed Hawkskettled in a thermal with a Turkey Vulture bringing up the rear. Shortlybefore noon, the first Osprey of the season flew right over the summit andquickly left Bradbury behind for some favorite northern fishing ground.Non-raptor Observations:A flock of 6 SANDHILL CRANES was spotted this afternoon flying northeastout past the mountain. A little flock of seven Cedar Waxwings paused at thesummit to see if their Bohemian relatives had overlooked any juniperberries. The number of waterfowl, blackbird, and other migrants continuesto rise.Non-raptor migrants:Canada Goose- 395Common Merganser- 13duck sp.- 4Sandhill Crane- 6Cedar Waxwing- 7European Starling- 12Red-winged Blackbird- 17Common Grackle- 43blackbird sp.- 43American Robin- 3American Goldfinch- 2Common Redpoll- 1passerine sp.- 86 Predictions:Tomorrow looks like another good one. The wind will be a lighter, 5-10mphout of the northwest, and there will be much more sunshine with mostlysunny to partly cloudy skies all day. Temperatures may be a bit cooler,running a few degrees shy of 50.
