Total observation time: 8 hours
Official Counter: Katrina Fenton
Observers: Alan McKelvy, Frank Paul, Julie Krasne, Tom Downing
Visitors:
46.
Weather:
Breezy conditions at the hawkwatch with a brisk 10-20mph west wind
increasing through the afternoon and swinging slightly to the north. Errant
gusts kept observers close to their optics and hikers hanging onto their
snacks. There was a brief window in the late morning when the sky attempted
to clear, but it was mostly-cloudy to overcast for the majority of the day.
Despite the wind and lack of much sunshine, temperatures were able to rise
to the upper 30s.
Raptor Observations:
Turkey vultures zipped and soared in the wind, catching updrafts, tearing
along with the gusts, and providing quite a show for hawkwatch visitors.
The local Red-tailed Hawk pair spent much of their day hunting on the west
side of the mountain.
Non-raptor Observations:
Only a handfull of species observed at the summit today. American Crows,
Common Ravens, and Herring Gulls ensured there was always something to
watch in the sky. A couple of Black-capped Chickadees sang briefly of
spring before the wind picked up and sent them packing.
Non-raptor Migrants:
American Crow- 9
Predictions:
There will be a 10-15mph northwest wind to contend with, but the
temperature may reach 40 degrees. It looks like there should be more
sunshine than today with only partly cloudy skies. Hopefully the wind will
be light enough that migrants won't be deterred.
