[Maine-birds] Barn Swallows - Benton Farm on Sebasticook River

The first group of Barn Swallows arrived this afternoon. Hopefully more
will be coming soon. The Barn Swallows are wonderful fliers. They jet
around and fly faster than the Tree Swallows. I counted over 20 Tree
Swallows in one section of the sky. Tree Swallows hawking all over the
place from 10 feet off the ground to as high as maybe 400 hundred feet.
No black flies here because of the swallows. I ate dinner on a deck
looking out over the Sebasticook. One Tree Swallow landed on the railing
a few feet away and looked right at me and just chirped at me. I am not
sure what he was saying. Maybe saying hello. Maybe he was saying it is
good to be back for the summer. Maybe saying we need more boxes. I
have 15 out right now. There is a lot of activity starting up. 5
cormorants on a wide rock in the river probably resting after a good
meal of alewife. Ducks floating down the river. A few geese making a
nest on a grassy island. A mature eagle in a tree over the river. Red
wings perching and calling out. An Ospray flying down the river. Some
morning doves going down to the river for a drink off some ledges. Half
dozen Common Mergs flying up stream. A phoebe darting out from a tree
branch catching flies. Robins chasing each other. A pair of blue birds
being loners. A number of sparrows too far away to identify. Our
current California like weather is being enjoyed by the birds. Happy
birding.
