Total observation time: 8 hours
Official Counter: Katrina Fenton
Observers: Henry Walters, Julie Krasne
Visitors:
17.
Weather:
Blue skies with a few high, whispy clouds sweeping in for the earliest part
of the afternoon. Temperatures soared to the upper 60s, cooling slightly
with the seabreeze. The wind stayed fairly light, gradually increasing from
the south-southeast.
Raptor Observations:
The whir of rapid wingbeates, followed by a brown flash sensed more than
seen was the only warning of an attack. It was just enough for the Mourning
Doves, who scattered away, leaving a young Sharp-shinned Hawk perched by
itself in the maples.
Non-raptor Observations:
A Fish Crow showed up briefly this afternoon, flying back in the direction
of Portland for more savory dumpster diving. Hawkwatch Yellow-bellied
Sapsucker was up for the first time this season, noisily making the rounds
of the summit.
Non-raptor Migrants:
Common Loon- 1 Double-crested Cormorant- 16
Tree Swallow- 8 Barn Swallow- 2 swallow sp.- 2
Yellow-rumped Warbler- 1 warbler sp.- 2
American Goldfinch- 1 Purple Finch- 2 passerine sp.- 3
Predictions:
Partly cloudy skies tomorrow. The wind will begin the day out of the west,
then swing to the east and increase to the higher end of 5-10mph.
Temperatures will climb to the upper 50s. East wind isn't that great for
migrants, but it will be light enough that there will be some birds moving.
We're one Osprey away from tying the old season record!
