[Maine-birds] Maine Birds

May 21, about 10:20 am - Rt 15 between Guilford and Dover-Foxcroft, Herring Brothers Meat Market in Guilford:
I had a bird encounter unlike anything I've experienced before. It was raining hard so I decided not to go for a walk. I drove by the meat market and noticed 2 TURKEY VULTURES in the trees and decided to go back and check them out. I turned off my car and rolled the window down. While watching the Vultures, I was hearing a noise that sounded like "poing - poing." It had a vibrating quality to it something like metal on metal. I figured someone was outside on the property working on something and I wondered why they would want to be out in the rain. I brought my binoculars down and noticed a COMMON RAVEN on a lower, closer branch. It was the Raven that was making the noise! After a while, he tipped his head back a little and made a high, staccato noise that sounded like "poink, poink, poink" sometimes adding a lower- pitched fourth "poink." Then occasionally he would move his wings a little away from his body and lower his head to produce a low "rattle." In between these vocalizations he would make some soft, more traditional "awks." I watched and listened for about 45 minutes. He started closing his eyes and went silent. I left him to his musings in the rain. Fascinating and comical; I had never seen a bird make non-bird sounds before!
