[Maine-birds] MACHIAS SEAL ISLAND REPORT

I got back on the island late yesterday morning, September 24th, so haven't had much time to wander around. Nonetheless, a few things are notable.

There were at least 8 BROAD WINGED HAWKS hunting and passing through in the very late afternoon. We see occasional Broad Winged most years but they are usually our least numerous. Thus Wednesday was a near record day.

Other raptors included 2 EAGLES, 1 PEREGRINE, 1 HARRIER & 1 MERLIN.

I found 1 GOLDEN PLOVER, likely one of the several which have been seen for several days.

Other species of birds are fairly unremarkable: a few Kinglets; scattered Vireos; lots of Savannah Sparrows; a sprinkle of SONG, SWAMP and WHITE THROATED SPARROWS; a couple of SPOTTED SANDPIPERS; 1 LEAST SANDPIPER.
Of course, there were a few unidentified but intriguing sulkers.

Also of special note were at least 10 MONARCH BUTTERFLIES, the latest arriving after 6pm.

This morning, just after sunrise, there was a Peregrine Falcon screaming like crazy and racing around for no apparent reason.
