[Maine-birds] Monhegan-9.23.14

More birds arrived on the island this morning, livening things up out here. Highlights for me today included:

Wood Duck - 2 seen by others at the Ice Pond, 1 later seen flying over the Trailing Yew
Greater Yellowlegs - 2 at Swim Beach this morning
Nice raptor movement, including many Merlins, at least 6 Osprey, and several Sharpies and  Peregrines (including one big presumed female perched across from the Yew preening for a very long time)
Red-headed Woodpecker - 1 continuing juv. bird
Yellow-bellied Sapsucker - 1 fly by, first of trip
Ruby-throated Hummingbird - several still linger
Warbler numbers low, mostly Yellow-rumps and Blackpolls, it seems; I'm up to 14 for this trip (though at least 5 other species have been reported on past week), including Tennessee, Cape May, Prairie, Wilson's, Nashville, etc.
Lark Sparrow - at least 1 continuing bird, across from Tribler Cottage
Clay-colored Sparrow - 1 very obliging, strongly marked bird in the pumpkin patch on the Meadow
Bobolink - 1 + in the Meadow
Baltimore Oriole - high count of 8

Also reported:
Yellow-breasted Chat - 1 still being seen intermittently on the way to Lobster Cove
Philly and Warbling Vireos (still being seen though I saw neither today)
Pine Siskin - 1+ near Lobster Cove (Don Reimer et al)
Blackburnian Warbler - 1 (Steve and Jane Mirick, on Horn Hill, if I'm remembering right)

Trip highlight for me has been how many Monarchs are flying around out here, with good numbers also of Red Admiral, American Lady, and Painted Lady butterflies.

Heard flight calls tonight while up at the lighthouse, hope more new birds drop in tomorrow morning...
