Highlights from today 5/4 roaming around the area from Kennebunk to Ogunquit included the following:
Parsons Beach in Kennebunk was short on migrants, but a huge group of RED-NECKED GREBES (which based on recent reports have been here for about a week) at the mouth of the Mousam River, a lingering pair of AMERICAN WIGEON on the marsh with a large group of GREEN-WINGED TEAL, lots of Long-tailed Ducks, a PEREGRINE driving the PURPLE SANDPIPER flock from the rocks, and returning summer breeding Eastern WILLETS.
At Kennebunk Plain, I had numerous singing VESPER and FIELD SPARROWS, a pair of AMERICAN KESTRELS, and EASTERN MEADOWLARKS. No Uppies to be found unfortunately.
Highlight of the day was the area around the dam at Lake Carolyn in Ogunquit, with multiple YELLOW-RUMPED, PALM, PINE, BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLERS, NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH, LEAST FLYCATCHER, Ruby-crowned Kinglet, Blue-grey Gnatcatcher, and BLUE-HEADED VIREO, mostly all FOYs for me, plus SPOTTED SANDPIPER, and some lingering Bufflehead and Ring-necked Ducks. This area is small, but definitely traps migrants with the moving water and lots of insects around the below-dam seep.
At Hope Cemetery and Woods in Kennebunk, I picked up RED-SHOULDERED HAWK, and a pair of BARRED OWLS calling to one another. FISH CROWS were also vocal. Not only because this is (partly) in my Maine Bird Atlas block, but this is a newly accessible birding location. While the cemetery has been around for well over 100 years, and the woods behind it has long had an unofficial network of trails, over the winter the town and the local land trust protected the property and the new trails are now well signed and are open. The cemetery, like many others in the state, should be a great spot to look for migrants in the next two weeks.
