Saturday on and around Schoodic Point during NPS ranger-led programsproduced the following observational highlights:22 Red Crossbills (on Schoodic Education and Research Center campus, in a single flock)1 Black-crowned Night Heron - an immature, on the edge of the Schoodic Point parking lot at 2:30 PM28 Northern Gannet - during "SeaWatch", a ranger-led program from 1-3 PM on the Point, some actively diving (mackerel ?)76 Common Eider (C. eider dot the shore all along the ocean side of the auto loop on the peninsula)1 Black Scoter (from the Point)6 Great Blue Heron (East Pond just beyond Arey Cove)2 Laughing gull (from Point)Black guillemot, D.C. cormorant, Herring gull, G.B.B. gull (at Point and elsewhere along auto loop)1 Minke whale (within binocular reach of Point)9 - 12 Harbor Porpoise1 Gray SealAn assortment of butterfly species (at least 6 species positively ID at the Point)A few large dragonflies (darners?) passing by the point.Birds of interest at bird (banding) lab this week included: Blue-winged warbler and Yellow-bellied flycatcherA note to birders/observers using Schoodic Peninsula: I would greatly appreciate receiving your reports offline if you care to share them with me.Many thanks!
