Re: [Maine-birds] Downeast Avocet

The male American Avocet continues today, Tuesday 8/28. Up to 3 hours past high, the bird was foraging along the NW edge of Joy Cove proper. After that, the bird moved to the mudflats south of the boat landing in Steuben Harbor (such as it is). The landing is shown on the DeLorme atlas map 25, bottom of E2. Thanks to Bill and to Dick Hildreth.

He has given permission for people to go down the path from his cabin to the shore of Joy Cove. The bird is best seen right before high tide when the amount of shoreline is reduced. The cove empties out at low tide giving the bird a much larger area in which it can hide.
