I received a lot of feedback about this post. Apparently its not uncommon for Blue Jays to undergo a severe molt like this. Also a special nod to Bill Sheehan who identified it as the "Lesser Blue Vulture." That begs for a Photoshop creation.

"Jays, Blackbirds and various other species may exhibit similar drastic, total-head molt. They look terrible bald headed but they grow new feathers fairly quickly. No intervention necessary."
