[Maine-birds] Merlin vs. "owl"

The Machias River behind Helen’s Restaurant is alive with Bonaparte’s Gulls lately. I counted over 800 today.

 

But for those who are familiar with Machias, you know that there are several old buildings with fake owls on the roof to keep the gulls away. It doesn’t work, of course. But this afternoon I watched a Merlin try to drive off one of the fake owls, making several passes at it. The “owl” won.
