[Maine-birds] Cutler landbirds on Tuesday

Hi folks,

I was working next to and in a raised bog in Cutler most of Tuesday.  Song activity was slow as it rained part of the day and was cloudy and misting the rest of the time.  Also, a cloud of voracious blackflies surrounded me during the late afternoon.

There were a couple of new arrivals in nesting habitat that included three Swainson's thrushes and a yellow-bellied flycatcher who repeatedly gave the single chebunk-like note at scattered intervals.  Nice sound.  Lincoln's sparrows increased from 2 to 6 widely scattered singing males.  Another nice sound.

I also had an odd sound experience where a gobbling turkey was vocalizing next to the bog where I was standing on 10 ft. of peat, mostly partially decomposed Sphagnum mosses.  At the same time, three Lincoln's sparrows, two palm warblers, 1 Wilson's warbler and a Wilson's snipe were vocalizing from the bog.  Hearing turkeys while standing in a bog was a first after a couple of thousand hours working in bogs.

The trees have not leafed out yet in this area.  It is like going back three weeks in time.

Happy birding.
