[Maine-birds] Frenchman Bay...Razorbills

Thur. 23 May 2013
Two trips around the bay today, intermittent fog but mostly clear air.
Common Loons were moving eastward across the bay today, about 10 single birds, all in breeding plumage, flying northeast between 10 a.m. and noon.
A number of nests of Double-crested Cormorants on Thrumcap I. were destroyed by gulls. Two kayakers camped on the island and disrupted the birds allowing the gulls to raid the nests. A few are still nesting but the number of nests at this time are about 1/3 that were there a week ago.
Small groups of 2-6 Black Scoters moving around the bay, most going northeast but a few going south.
Male Common Eiders courting females at Egg Rock, often 4-5 males aggressively chasing single females.
Bald Eagle feeding unseen eaglet on Sheep Porcupine nest.
Single Ruddy Turnstone on Burnt Porcupine Island.
Six (4 in one group, 2 in another) Razorbills between Ironbound and Long Porcupine Islands this a.m.
Many Black Guillemots flying into nesting crevasses on most islands.
4-6 Barn Swallows flying around the Egg Rock Lighthouse.
