[Maine-birds] Machias River birding

Highlights from a morning walk along the Sunrise Trail between the Dike and the East Machias town line included two Great Egrets, an immature Little Blue Heron, three Lesser and two Greater Yellowlegs, a single Killdeer, a close fly-by by a female Merlin as she took off to strafe the flock of 500-800 peeps on the opposite side of the river, 15-20 Bonaparte's gulls, an indeterminate number of Common Terns more heard than seen due to the thick fog over the river, and at least ten Nelson's Sparrows singing up a storm in the salt marsh.  There was also a perched-up sparrow that might have been a Le Conte's, although he was singing back at the other Nelson's Sparrows and my overall impression was that of a very pale, washed-out Nelson's, possibly even leucistic. The three other Nelson's that we saw clearly were of typical coloration. Tom tried to take a picture of the pale sparrow with his cell phone, but his telephoto feature didn't work, so we didn't catch it.
