Yesterday morning, the fog was thick as the tide ebbed in the lagoon. There were hundreds of peeps foraging on the algae-covered mud. Their contact calls were impressively loud…more noticeable than usual. I was able to record the sound, with surf in the background the only competition.
The resident Merlin also made 2 passes, appearing out of the gloom w/o warning. Because of the thick fog, the peeps were unable to see the Merlin coming, so did not flee en masse, as they usually do. Held their ground. But I believe the Merlin depends on flushing prey, then wheeling around and snatching it out of the air. It was unsuccessful both tries. So both predator and prey were hampered by the visibility conditions. Cool to watch.
