I agree with Craig K. re: the joys of Birders and Burgers on MDI and would like to add, "what could be better than..." Birders and Breakfast. Yesterday morning and again today our yard has been swarmed with crazy-active birds swooping and chasing each other. Even the birds (D. E. Junco, R.T. Hummingbird, R.B. Nuthatch, P. Finch, B.C. Chick.) who have nested in the yard or the woods around it have stepped up the mania a notch.
Yesterday I glanced out the window to see a male N. Parula taking a break at the top of a Rhododendron bush. This morning when I looked out onto the oak branch that overhangs our deck, a fledgling Chipping Sparrow was looking back. The rest of its family was hopping under the bird feeder. Ten minutes ago there was a bright flash of white among the leaves and a few seconds later the most brilliant Black and White warbler I've ever seen was making its way along the tree-trunk about 12' away and (as I sit here indoors with my coffee and cheerios) at eye level.
Usually I complain about the lack of sunlight, soil and drainage in our yard, and the abundance of mosquitoes and Deer Flies, but not this morning.
