[Maine-birds] Re: White-faced Ibis at Scarborough Marsh

A quick update--Peter Vickery sent me photos of the birds seen today. One of them is the same bird found Saturday that has a broad border of white feathering around the face that juts back somewhat behind the lower jaw. The SECOND bird is clearly different from the bird I described without any white feathering. Peter's second bird has a narrow border of white and may well be the "second" bird that Noah and I captured incidentally in photos on Saturday. This might be the same pair that has been returning here over the past couple of years. The third bird without white feathering clearly is at least partly White-faced Ibis because its face and legs are so red. It may be a White-faced Ibis; I'll need to see it better to say more.

I forgot to mention that a couple of my photos of the boldly marked bird show a sometimes useful character that differs between Glossy and White-faced. The tertials, and sometimes adjacent coverts, show a bronzy (greenish-yellow to gold) iridescence on White-faced. Glossy has a greener iridescence. This is variable, and in some lights the bronzy effect is not visible. Subadults also can lack it (and females?). Here's a photo of what I mean: https://flic.kr/p/ndJGvg

Peter's eBird list with description and photos of this second bird is here:

Thanks to Peter, Ken and others for the feedback.

Good birding!
Et Al,
Fairfield
