[Maine-birds] Monhegan, 9.18-9.19

A minor health issue kept me from fully participating in my first full day of birding this trip, but I can report that there are some interesting birds out here if not in any numbers. Several Cape May Warblers posed obligingly in the big spruce overhanging Wharf Rd most of the day. A Prairie Warbler was a regular near "the crossroads." Philadelphia Vireos seem to equal Red-eyed in number--I'm probably exaggerating, but I've seen the same number of both in the past 36 hrs! A Red-headed Woodpecker was fun to watch in the spruces off Lobster Cove Rd this afternoon. Hummingbirds are still buzzing around, and yesterday, at least two Baltimore Orioles in town. At least three Rusty Blackbirds were hanging out near the Meadow.

Also reported by others: Don Reimer and David Gulick spotted a Blue-winged Warbler this morning at the Ice Pond. Scott Surner caught a glimpse of a Yellow-breasted Chat on the way to Lobster Cove. Someone else, I'm sorry I'm forgetting who, saw a Tennessee Warbler on the lilacs in town.

Highlight of the day: Minke Whale repeatedly surfacing off Lobster Cove this afternoon while we hung out on a bench in the sun--my favorite kind of whale-watching!
