A quick spin through Essex Woods yesterday turned up two solitary sandpipers and two Baird’s sandpipers hanging out together on the mud flats in the area where the rails have been putting on a show. The solitary is a positive ID, but I would love to get confirmation on the Baird’s by another experienced birder, because I don’t get to see them very often. (Unfortunately, my dearly beloved is out on a multi-day trip with a birding group from Tampa.) Identifying characteristics included peep size, wings extending slightly beyond the tail, beautiful dark golden-brown dappling on the back, very strong and well-delineated gray-brown barring on the breast, and a somewhat chunky black bill and legs. I didn’t have a camera with me, so I don’t have a photo to share.
