[Maine-birds] Monhegan update, 9.18.17

Bill Thompson and Don Reimer photographed a beautiful BLUE-WINGED WARBLER this morning, which I just missed seeing by a few minutes, darnit. It was first seen by birders yesterday. My consolation prize was turning up a late Canada Warbler. In general, it felt like there were a few more warblers around today, with greater species diversity.

I also missed seeing an American Bittern that popped up several times in the Meadow.

Fortunately I did see the continuing juvenile RED-HEADED WOODPECKER, which Jeannette Lovitch relocated behind the Trailing Yew, and the continuing juvenile YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON roosting in a tree at the end of the Ice Pond.

I hear that the SAY'S PHOEBE first reported Saturday continues, as well, though not where Jeannette and I were looking for it today, of course. It has apparently moved to the rocks north of White Head. Our consolation prize for that miss was a bright Clay-colored Sparrow hanging out near the shore and Northern Gannets diving close offshore in the fog.

Did not hear of anyone seeing the FY PAINTED BUNTING today, though quite a few birders were in that general area throughout the day (it was last seen yesterday, about where the Blue-winged Warbler was seen this morning).

Other interesting birds I observed today include multiple DICKCISSELS, a Philadelphia Vireo, and several Lincoln's Sparrows. And about a zillion Northern Flickers, which are far from uncommon, I know, but really beautiful and marvelously verbal birds. Also, growing numbers of Cedar Waxwings, which are one of my favorites, so always worthy of note. I'm sure there were even more interesting birds that I completely missed!

If only we could get a Fork-tailed Flycatcher of our own out here...
