Re: [Maine-birds] Digest for maine-birds@googlegroups.com - 7 updates in 4 topics

This afternoon (9/8) off Eastern Road in Scarborough Marsh, there was a Hudsonian Godwit, as well as two stilt sandpipers.
The snowy egret hybrid was also present. After looking at some photographs on line and checking two articles in the Auk (Meeks et al, Interbreeding of a Tricolored Heron and a Snowy Egret in South Dakota, 113 (4) Oct 1996 pp 955-957 and Sprunt, A Hybrid between the Little Blue Heron and the Snowy Egret 71 1954 pp 314-5), I am curious how this bird has been identified as a snowy egret x tricolored heron rather than a snowy egret x little blue heron. I would welcome any information. Thank you. Danny Danforth

The WESTERN KINGBIRD was still visible as of 5:30pm near the start of
the Barrier Beach Trail, within view of the fenced in vegetable
gardens. Earlier four of us observed the bird snatching insects and
ripe Black Cherries along the Knight Trail, at the edge of the field
near the tan camper.

Great find, Will!

Best,
Josh

While western kingbird is not a mega rarity, I imagine many would like to chase this one.

nota bene:

This weekend is a major fundraising event at the Wells Reserve (Laudholm Farm). The main gate opens late (~9:30) and traffic is usually very heavy. Every visitor is asked for festival admission, which is $5 for members and $10 for others. The reported kingbird site is used for volunteer and vendor parking beginning long before the public gate opens.

I would advise not trying to beat the rush or parking on roadsides to "sneak in early" on Saturday morning. It really is hectic. Police give the area extra attention.

If you insist on an early attempt and don't mind walking, there's a small public parking area behind 100 Laudholm Farm Road. From there, follow the road or take the scenic route (Yankee Woodlot Trail…).

If you don't mind waiting a bit and are willing to pay the elevated entrance fee, come to the 31st annual Laudholm Nature Crafts Festival. Help pay the bills for the place, support its work, and — bonus — maybe get a lifer / state bird / year bird.

Or wait until 4pm, pay the standard admission ($0 / $5) and take your chances the kingbird is still around.

Thanks for understanding.

Migrating sandhill cranes have returned to the Fryeburg Harbor area. This morning there were 10 of them in a group on West Fryeburg Road (Rt 113), in a field across the street from Riverside Farm. For those using a GPS the nearest mailbox was 943 West Fryeburg Road.
