Chris Elphick contacted me and wanted to let Maine birders know that although the NYT article doesn't say so, key members of the team behind the work are based in Maine. In particular, Brian Olsen and Kate Ruskin at UMaine, and Tom Hodgman formerly at Maine IF&W. Also, a number of graduate students in Brian's lab over the past few years performed much of the work.
