[Maine-birds] Sidney baby kestrels

The good news is three kestrels fledged in my neighborhood. They're adorable hunting for bugs on my neighbor's lawn. Or at least they were. The bad news is that one didn't make it--hit by a vehicle on the busy road where they nest. It must have just happened this a.m.--I came across it on my bike ride. Very distressed.

The killdeer in the field in front of my house, who face many predators real and imagined,  have also had to contend with my neighbors riding ATVs and dirt bikes in the corn row because it didn't get planted this wet spring. They seemed to be doing OK, but yesterday the farmer sprayed herbicide (are they going to plant this late??). Does anyone know the impact of herbicide on killdeer? Assuming not good.

Reaching for a positive: At least most of the hayfields around here weren't mowed early this year (except the one immediately surrounding my house. Oy!) Bobolinks should have had a good year.
