I just received word of the sighting of a possible/probable Black-bellied Whistling-Duck in Boothbay Harbor on 19 July.
The bird hasn't been re-sighted but no one has looked. Locals might want to give it a try.
Here are the details:
The location is a wetland associated with the Meadow Brook stream system, just east of the Lobster Cove Preserve on Route 96/Ocean Point Road.
Date: Thursday, July 19, 2012
Meadow Brook wetland on north side of Route 96/Ocean Point Road, Boothbay Harbor, just east of Lobster Cove Preserve [and 800 feet west of Back Narrows Road].
I saw the duck while standing on the north side of the road. It was about 100' from the roadway in the open water area next to the grasses. It was near a mallard and appeared slightly larger than the mallard, with red bill, grey face, copper/brown throat, and darker back of neck and back. I got a good look at it before it moved into the grasses.
It may be possible to get nearer to the pond to the north, which is where I assume the duck went, by going up Oak Lawn Cemetary Road.
For those venturing forth, it doesn't look like there's much of a pull out so please be careful.
Any news, positive or negative, would be helpful.
Best, Peter
