Comments: Dick and Barbara Leighton from MD/Brooksville enjoyed a whole morning of rain which at times fell in sheets as a storm front moved through the region. We had some interesting finds this morning including the first of the season juvenile SANDERLING with a beautifully spangled back foraging with a flock of nine Semipalmated Plover. Bonaparte's Gull continue here in good numbers.

Comments: Dick and Barbara Leighton in the Rain BUT we saw one of the largest flocks of large sandpipers I have seen here. They were flying in the rain south than back north over Alley Island where we lost sight of them behind the trees towards Oak Pont and the Hancock County airport. We pursued them (because we had nothing better to do in the heavy rain) but could not locate them. I did photograph and roughly estimated about 600 birds.... we could not identify them but they appeared to be Greater Yellowlegs to Black Bellied Plover size birds trying to fly in a heavy down pore. Very exciting!
6 species (+1 other taxa)
American Black Duck (Anas rubripes) 4
Common Loon (Gavia immer) 1
Double-crested Cormorant (Phalacrocorax auritus) 5
Black-bellied Plover (Pluvialis squatarola) 1 this bird flew directly overhead from the west.
peep sp. (Calidris sp. (peep sp.)) 600 A large flock of birds (size of Greater Yellowlegs) moving south initially over the water north of Mount Desert Island crossing Alley Island where they turned north again back over Alley Island to Oak Point where we lost them behind he trees as they clearly descended to land. We watched the flock for 15 minutes as it weaved and gyrated like a school of fish.
Ring-billed Gull (Larus delawarensis) 7
Herring Gull (Larus argentatus) 37
