[Maine-birds] This Week's Highlights and Shorebird High Counts, 8/11-17.

Hi all,

With much of my week spent birding and visiting family out of state, I have just a few highlights to report:

- 1 Long-tailed Duck, 4 Black Scoters, and 1 White-winged Scoter, Simpson's Point, Brunswick, 8/11 (with Saturday Morning Birdwalk group).

- 1 adult MUTE SWAN, Legion Pond, Kittery, 8/12 (with Jeannette).

- 1 juvenile Peregrine Falcon, Popham Beach State Park, Phippsburg, 8/16.

 

Of course, most of my time birding in the state was spent looking at shorebirds, so here are my shorebird high counts this week (no Scarborough or Biddeford visits):

Black-bellied Plover: 62 adults, Wharton Point, Brunwsick, 8/16 (with Saturday Morning Birdwalk group).

Semipalmated Plover: 500-600 (at least one juvenile), Popham Beach State Park, 8/16.

Piping Plover: 1 adult, Popham Beach State Park, 8/16.

Killdeer: 3, Highland Road, Brunswick, 8/11 (with Saturday Morning Birdwalk Group).

Greater Yellowlegs: 14 adults, Popham Beach State Park, 8/16.

Lesser Yellowlegs: 17 (about 1/2 adult), Popham Beach State Park, 8/16.

Spotted Sandpiper: 5, Fort Foster, Kittery, 8/12 (with Jeannette).

Whimbrel: 2, Popham Beach State Park, 8/16.

Ruddy Turnstone: 1 adult, Popham Beach State Park, 8/16.

Sanderling: 46, Popham Beach State Park, 8/16.

Semipalmated Sandpiper: 2100 (about 2% juvenile), Popham Beach State Park, 8/16.

Least Sandpiper: small numbers at various locations.

White-rumped Sandpiper: 8 adults, Popham Beach State Park, 8/16.

Pectoral Sandpiper: 6, Popham Beach State Park, 8/16

STILT SANDPIPER: 3 juvenile, Popham Beach State Park, 8/16.

Short-billed Dowitcher: 19, Popham Beach State Park, 8/16.

 

Other migrants continue to increase in number and diversity, so I will forgo this additional report.
