[Maine-birds] Re: (Maine Birds) Hancock County Birds: Turkey Vulture and Snow Bunting

Hancock County Birds: Turkey Vulture and Snow Bunting

Hulls Cove Bar Harbor, Hancock, US-ME
Mar 18, 2013 1:10 PM
Protocol: Incidental
Comments: Son Graham and I going to Ellsworth for an eye-doctor appt. after a basketball injury. Two Turkey Vulture crossing over the water at Hulls Cove are by FOY with Graham saying, " Dad their only little blobs, how can you know that!" After somewhere around 30,000 plus TV's you almost sense them before you see them...... nothing like TV's. History here starts in earnest during and after 1993 when they began. That summer I reported seeing 6-10 TV over the south ridge of Champlain Mountain. This is a frequent valley of choice for many TV's and Raptors and a place to see both spring and fall raptor migration.

Turkey Vulture (Cathartes aura) 2 Seen crossing the water over Hulls Cove at 1:10 pm  FOY for MDI and Hancock County.

Lamoine Beach, Lamoine Maine , Hancock, US-ME
Mar 18, 2013 3:45 PM - 4:15 PM
Protocol: Traveling
0.7 mile(s)
Comments: Son Graham and I walked Lamoine Beach looking for dead birds (no recoveries) but running into a very alive SNOW BUNTING foraging in and around the rotting Knotter Wrack and Fucu mix in the upper tidal zone and into the edge of the salt marsh. Seen near the parking area.

Bald Eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) 2 Mixed age groups mostly adults dispersing twice, first for a alternate plumage 2nd year juvenile than 10 minutes later a alternate plumage 4th year sub-adult. Both Bald Eagles flew on strong winds after circling a few times for distant photos

Herring Gull (Larus argentatus) 350 One flock on the shore (perhaps being feed by humans) Mixed age groups mostly adults dispersing twice, first for a alternate plumage 2nd year juvenile than 10 minutes later a alternate plumage 4th year sub-adult. Both Bald Eagles flew on strong winds after circling a few times for distant photos
Great Black-backed Gull (Larus marinus) 3 among the shoreline group and one off shore
American Crow (Corvus brachyrhynchos) 9

Snow Bunting (Plectrophenax nivalis) 1 This is a frequent location for this species. Not surprising but excellent photos due to frigid cold wind off the water (see facebook.com)
