[Maine-birds] Pelagic Trip Opportunity - 26-27 September 2015

Greetings!

I wanted to send a reminder to the Maine birding community about an exciting pelagic trip opportunity this fall. Although the August overnight trip is full, the Brookline Bird Club will be running another overnight trip to the continental shelf waters (around 120 miles south of Cape Cod) on Saturday-Sunday, 26-27 September.

Last year was the first year that we ran a September trip, and we weren't disappointed. A single White-faced Storm-Petrel close to the boat was the obvious highlight, but we also crushed the single day high count for Audubon's Shearwater (more than tripled it, in fact, with a total of 158 individuals on Sunday!) and had a great variety of other pelagic birds (a few juvenile Long-tailed Jaegers, lots of phalaropes, Band-rumped and Leach's Storm-Petrels, etc.) We have great chances at seeing a couple species that have never occurred in Maine, and maybe never will. Plus, who knows what mega-rarities are lurking on those deep, warm waters? My fingers are crossed for a Barolo Shearwater...

Just think about what an awesome combo platter this could be - tick off cold-water species like Great Skua on Maine Audubon's pelagic from Bar Harbor a couple weeks before, and then head down to the tropical land of Cape Cod and round out your pelagic-birds-in-the-month-of-September list!

More info from trip organizer Ida Giriunas below. I hope to see some of you there!

Best,

Luke Seitz
