This has been a very interesting topic, especially since it has come up on both Maine and Carolina bird listservs in the past week. I too will be ordering some coffee from Birds and Beans--certified shade grown and organic. As Bill points out, right now I don't know for sure if the shade is native or imported, but it is a place to begin. There are solutions, but they are often complex, aren't they? I just want to suggest that we also remember Derek's admonition about beef. If you have not read "Fast Food Nation" let me suggest you give it a little attention, then see if you still want that Big Mac, etc. I was fortunate enough to grow up on a farm in the south where my dad raised grass-fed beef. It was delicious, so we continue to seek out grass-fed at our local farmers' markets. Yes, it's a bit more costly, but maybe we just need to eat a little less meat anyway. It has been suggested that everyone eating just one meatless meal a week would do wonders for our environment.
I am so proud to be associated with two very aware organizations.
