[Maine-birds] eBird Report - Head of Tide Preserve, Jun 8, 2012

Very wet-going this morning at Coastal Mountains Land Trust's Head of
Tide Preserve in Belfast, but there were a lot of birds singing. A
highlight for me was the grouse with chicks. I had no idea they could
fly while so young! I was very confused for a moment when I first
heard the distinct sound of a flushed grouse, but then saw all these
tiny puff balls popping up into the nearby trees.

This preserve has some wonderful mixed habitats--field, forest,
riparian, power line corridor--and definitely merits further bird
exploration, as well as the Land Trust's Stover Preserve across the
street which features mixed-age forest and hemlock-shaded riverfront.

Comments:     Leading a walk for Coastal Mountains Land Trust. This
property is owned by the Land Trust. Very high, wet grass hindered a
broader exploration of the preserve, and we didn't get over to the
power line corridor, which can be very productive birding on the right
day (nesting ospreys, singing prairie warblers, etc.)

Ruffed Grouse  10     Flushed a hen grouse with a lot of chicks (this

though still looking very downy. The hen made distress calls off in
the woods for the short time I was in the area.
