[Maine-birds] MACHIAS SEAL ISLAND REPORT

We knew that the odds were against success but it's still sad to
report that the GANNET'S nest was empty when I checked it yesterday
and no Gannet has been seen on or near the nest since early Wednesday.
A surveillance camera might have caught the theft but I'm confident
that it's just one more casuality among the hundreds of Terns,
Puffins, Razorbills, Murres & Eiders that are lossing their eggs and
hatchlings to the uncontrolled Gulls.

On a less somber note, there was an unexpected pulse of YELLOW
WARBLERS yesterday, a scattering of MAGNOLIA WARBLERS, female
REDSTARTS, one unidentified LARK, a handful of TREE & BARN SWALLOWS
and a couple of LEAST FLYCATCHERS.

This morning I saw a WHITE BREASTED NUTHATCH and a probable RED
BREASTED NUTHATCH.

On the ALCID front, the RAZORBILLS are well into their hatch and the
PUFFINS are begining to break out.

Some SAVANNAH SPARROWS are carrying food and yesterday I had one
perform a perfect "broken wing" deception. It was so good that for a
moment, until I realized it was too small, I was sure it was a SPOTTED
SANDPIPER.

I caught a glimpse of a Spotty chick this morning, likely one from a 4-
egg nest that I found a couple weeks ago.
