Weather:
Mostly cloudy skies took their time clearing, and temperatures hovered at
or just below the freezing mark in the shade. The wind began the day out of
the west, shifting NW and not becoming anywhere near as gusty as was
predicted. It was a good sky for finding birds, and what sun there was made
it easy to stay warm.
Raptor Observations:
9:00a.m., and hawks were in the air. Mixed buteo kettles swirled with
Turkey Vultures and accipiters. A pair of Cooper's Hawks were moved in and
displaying over their territory. If you found one bird, there would be
several more rising with it or behind. Raptors were determined to get
north, and in the second-largest March flight this site has recorded, new
high day count records were set for both Red-shouldered Hawks and
Red-tailed Hawks. Right before 3:00, a lanky-winged buteo with a dark belly
came up through the gap to circle overhead- the first and maybe only
Rough-legged Hawk of the season.
Non-raptor Observations:
The species count is picking up, with 26 observed from the summit today.
There were a fair number of American Crows migrating, but less than we've
seen lately.
Non-raptor Migrants:
Canada Goose- 25 Common Merganser- 5 duck sp.- 2
Great Blue Heron- 1 Killdeer- 1 northbound, 2 southbound
American Crow- x Common Grackle- 6
Red-winged Blackbird- 31 blackbird sp.~ 70
Purple Finch- 1
Predictions:
Clear skies tomorrow, becoming partly-cloudy later in the day. The wind
will be similar to today, out of the NW at 10-15mph. The temperature will
rise into the 20's after a frosty start. All bets are off with birds on a
rush to get north. There are still plenty of migrants to come!
