[Maine-birds] MACHIAS SEAL ISLAND REPORT

SPRONGGGGG! Or whatever cartoon noise says "Spring is starting".

Sunday was near flat calm all day, that in itself very rare, but it also produced 5 RAVENS loudly interacting. Two of the Ravens were an apparent pair, likely the 2 we see all winter.

Then our overwintering population of 4 SONG SPARROWS took a dramatic jump to 21 and 2 JUNCOS arrived. I should think that they wintered relatively close but they seem to feel that it's time to start moving.

Added to the "signs": increasing competition among our 60 odd HARLEQUINS, 3 of our SNOW BUNTINGS are beginning to show breeding plumage, small flies are emerging, I saw my first beach Spider and first vegetation sprouting, lots of LONG TAILED DUCKS are moaning off-shore and the first few RAZORBILLS are rafting  west of the island in the evenings.

SPRONGGGGG!
