My wife and nestlings just called to report that they saw 4 woodcock in the muddy ditch along our road in Calais, Washington County, Maine. Also the "bell-like trill of the dark-eyed junco" can be heard, and I saw the first red-winged blackbird of the year, 13 eagles feeding on a carcass, and small flocks of black ducks and common mergansers in the tiny openings in the ice on Moosehorn NWR. Spring is arriving slooooowwly but surely to this corner of Maine.
