Re: [Maine-birds] Digest for maine...@googlegroups.com - 2 updates in 2 topics

Hello Loring,

Good find!!  You can report shorebird sightings at BandedBirds.org, which is shared by most of the shorebird research community.  The lime-green flag means it was banded in the US (Canada is white, Brazil is blue and so on).  I looked to see if +X6 is in the database and didn't find it--which may just mean that it was banded in May of this year and the researchers are behind in getting their data in.  Having + as the first character also suggests a recently banded bird--believe it or not, they ran out of combinations of the usual alphanumeric characters and had to add + and = to avoid repeating!

BTW, the metal band on the left leg is a USFWS band with a unique (long) number but you'd have to have the bird in hand to read it.

Hope this is useful info,

At 9 am Sun Aug 19 at Pine Point I saw a banded semipalmated sandpiper. It's right leg had a light green tag that read +x6
and its left leg had a silver band. Could someone suggest the right person or organization to notify? Thanks alot.

After a brief skirmish with another American bald eagle, this one kept its
prize...I think a menhaden. Also captured a gull flying away with a crab,
unfortunately it wasn't an Asian green crab. Oh well.
