[Maine-birds] Re: Great Gray Owls - February 2019

Hi Doug, A birding friend reported that he came eye-to-eye with a Boreal Owl perched on a lower branch of a pine tree, close to the the trunk, at night in Kennebunkport last weekend.  I thought the sighting was unlikely, yet based on your post am now wondering if maybe he did see a Boreal Owl!

Cheers,

Hi all:

I don't have specifics to share but thought everyone would be interested that there was apparently a small flight of Great Gray Owls into Maine during February. There have been three reports, that I know of:

17 Feb 2019 - Winterport (Waldo)
23 Feb 2019 - Readfield (Kennebec)
27 Feb 2019 - Phippsburg (Kennebec)

Each of these reports were only from single days and photos were not detailed enough to show if this may have been the same individual wandering  or multiple birds. I also heard rumor of a Boreal Owl from central Maine in mid February, perhaps also part of this larger owl movement we are seeing with all the Barred Owls around this winter…

Good birding,
